Pradnya - i guess in you had a "soft touch" or "halo-ing" in mind to begin with. Sharpening will counter the softness. To have the impressionistic effect, you do need a shallow DoF.
Secondly, i guess it was taken inside a room. Any sharpening or increased DoF would have highlighted the background window panes. A small suggestion that you could use - use a small aquamarine/green/grey cotton cloth behind the set up. This way, you eliminate any risk of background spoil.
Sharpness apart, the subject was abnormally cropped . A little head and shoulder room would help. All IMHO:)
