Wow!!! Breathtaking image!! Congratulations on the award, very most deserving. Two years ago, I went to Oregon and Washington for a photo shoot, and one that topped my list was Mt. Ranier. It never showed itself since it was always covered in the clouds the whole time I was there. I've seen many shots of the mountain at this lake, but none as beautiful as this one. Outstanding work, A Perfect 7++++

I also said this image is over processed and do not have the natural appearance, mixed unbalanced lighting at all zones with very false colors.
The problem is, this image still appear on the first page with 2 awards just because the photographer is a Moderator on UF.
This is where someone likes Ph. The big moderator here gave those awards without really looking into the quality of such photograph.
I am not against anyone here but I feel, there should always be a second opinion to what been posted on this site, this is the way we all learn.
It not nice to just give a comment expecting in return a comment on your images, even if those images do require a technical comment of corrections to the image.
I know my earlier comment regarding the over manipulations been on this image been removed by other moderators, or even the photographer himself being a moderator here but never mind, still there is plenty of times and chances to overcome such an act by the moderators.
Sorry being so liberal and open minded on this site.

I am very happy for you dear Hugo, yesterday the Editor choice on the front page and today the Photographer of the Day on the front page.
This show that the other members of UF must to produce twice as much better quality images to be as luckier as you are.
No shame, who try’s harder should be first to an Award, that why UF is so great at least with its well served members.

As much as I share in the comments of this beautiful scene you captured at one of the country's most beautiful National Parks, I would say without benefit of the orginal version, that there is too much sharpness in this revised image.
I had never seen this photo before since I didn't join UseFilm.com until Mid Summer, so I have no idea what the original looked like; but this version that appeared today as the subject of a UseFilm.com highlighted critique appears more as a oil painting or a computer generated image than a true photograph. Did you also pump up the saturation levels or highlite the photo with a magenta hue? The grass appears to have that tone highlite I wouldnt expect to see reflected by the sky.
Otherwise it is a beautiful depiction of a natural phenomenon with the cloud fan shooting out and back from the Mountain, and the nice reflections you captured in the overflow area in the foreground.

hi Ian,
You're right on both counts. Almost....:) The foreground is rahter fuzzy, think I've misaligned another (identical) layer, and set the transparency to about 50% in photoshop.
And partially right on the second count. It is more than one shot, but both shots were taken at the same scene, a few minutes apart, so in a way it's a composite. Thanks for your comment too! Much appreciated!

Stunning image Hugo. Congratulations on the POD and thank you for your recent comments to my portfolio. To help you further perfect this I would be careful to blend your masked areas a little better. The sky/mountain contrast (for lack of a better term) becomes a little more obvious to the right edge of your image. The mask is so sharp that the sky looks like it was added. I of course only get this after letting my eye settle on your image, but at a quick glance it works well.

Hi Andree, that is an acceptable crop, I agree. I've tried two more extreme ones, and they definitely do not work. This one is very subtle, barely changing the image, I agree on that.... It doesn't cut out the soft focussed part, though, as I noticed it extends beyond the mud, about 1/6th more up.
What I like about the foreground as I posted it is that the grass runs completely along the lower edge; yours allows for a more open type of composition, doing more justice to the reflection of the mountain, perhaps.
A good crop, I think I'll follow your advice when I print this one next time.... Thanks!

Hi Andree, thanks for your comment. Realising it's a very subjective matter, I tend to differ; the foreground (even though rather soft) does IMO create the prelude and natural framing for the scene, if you see what I mean.
Yet, I like your thought, and I just needed to see it for myself, but I cannot really come up with a decent solution without either cropping off a bit of the reflection of the Mountain, or without leaving a (IMO, again) rather distracting strip of grass in the lower left corner. Would you please show me what you have in mind?

This is a stunning location. To add to what's being said about the soft foreground, I find that when I crop the bottom part of the image on my screen, the composition does not lose any strength and the softeness of the foreground disappears. :) Andree

Really nicely done Hugo, the light and weather certainly agreed with you on this day. The PS work is also well done, topping off a superb landscape capture. Having the mountain slightly off-center also works well. The radiant formation of the clouds around the mountain really makes this a pleasing composition. I also find the detail and foreground elements to be a nice feature, adding visual interest, esp. the mountains reflection. Besides the above, the bottom seems a little soft still, but that could be due to wind-blown grass & water with the 1/5th shutter.

Hmmm --- looks way over processed to me because the colors are way too intense and the light on the forest, especially, isn't what I'd expect to see when the clouds are lit up like that. I'm sure the scene looked spectacular, but the image looks almost like a fabrication.

Congratulations for the FP Hugo! Great landscape and very interesting choice of portrait (vertical) format. I like the reflections, but mostly I like the sky a lot, it looks like a great crown on the mountain. Also, the foreground with the green grass repeating the same curve as the clouds. In fact there are quite a number of curves happening in alternating rhythm.
The colors remind me of the old Western movies, but that's just me :)

hi there,finally returning after 2 wks. of absence and have much to catch up on...makes me proud to see such a magical shot of what we Native Americans call, Mt.Tahoma,which means
"the great mountain, which gives thunder and lightning, having great unseen powers" ...the colors glow and i especially like the halo effect of the cloud formations...good perspective to take in the textural terrain and the reflections...i am not a big fan of overly saturated landscapes/sky,but i don't put this image in that category because i see the saturation level as more gentle and gives a poetic feel to the image...reminds me of the light one sees after a rain when the rainbow appears...the light is the key element here IMHO

Hi Ann, Thanks for your comment. It poses a few good questions, which make me think. I see what you mean. When I took this shot, I remember trying to find the right location, but it was somehow impossible to compose a similar shot without the rubble in the foreground. I have a few shots with less grass, but in those photos, the small bits of mud and grass remove the coherence even more, and become a distraction. Only the next day, I managed to get a clear view, but that was taken from a different position, as I didn't have to take the sunset into account. Thanks again, very useful comment, it always helps to see an image through someone elses' eyes....:)

This is beautiful Hugo. I can't touch on the quality of the image as that has been dicussed by others far more qualified than I am so I'm just going to soak up the ambience and enjoy the fantastic sky you've captured here with those gorgeous clouds along with all the other beautiful elements in place to make this an absolute pleasure to view.
Having said that however, and being somewhat obsessed with finding the right composition, I was wondering if you eliminated the grasses in the foreground from your composition altogether would that have made for a more uncluttered scene and consequently a stronger image? I don't mean to crop out the foregound but perhaps a move to the left to get the reflection of the mountain in the stiller pool of water to the left of where it is now. Easy to say that now but it's just a thought. (so much for not saying anything and soaking up the ambience huh - oops)

To me, this is a very Atypical image from you. I am much more accustomed to shots that play geometric elements with/against each other. I am impressed that your incredible eye functions equally well in the wilderness/landscape environment. This has an almost "divine" feel to it, with the bold sky seemingly "presenting" the rest of the composition... like a choral introduction! The uneven treeline sews the two halves of the shot together nicely, breaking up any hint of symmetry.

an excellent 'classic' landscape photo! The colours are beautiful, and so is the magnificent framing of the mountain by the clouds.
I think that the softness is due to motion blur of the landscape itself. This is consistent with your observation that it is particularly present in the in the foreground. Besides of the grass, also the water is blurred, while the trees, the clouds and the mountain are pretty sharp. The subjects in the background must also have moved in this 1/5 second - maybe with the exception of the mountain :). But because these subjects are much further away, they appear less blurred.

First of all, thank you very much for your indepth analysis, and I must confess, I find it a huge compliment coming from you. I've seen the photos you people display on TimeCatcher as well as on Usefilm, and even though it is not entirely my cup of tea (this being the first attempt), I admire the skill and quality. That's also where I got my inspiration from to end up with something like this. -- But enough of this. As your comment is very elaborate, I'll reply point by point.
The softness is not resizing / compression related; there must've been a minor tremour in the camera, eventhough it was properly mounted / braced (as far as I can remember). I only bought the remote release a few days later in Seattle, so that might've been it. What strikes me as weird, though, is that the softness is primarily visible in the foreground, and seems to be worse in that area compared to the background. Another, less likely, reason I can come up with is that sudden breeze through the grass, but on the other hand, the unsharpness in the foreground also extends beyond the grass.
I'm with you on the aperture. f/14 should've been enough. (which leaves a slight tremour as sole cause, although that would also imply a larger motion blur in The Mountain itself).
As to the defraction, The Nikon 12-24 f/4 is a very decent piece of glass, Having said that, it's there, allright, but it's barely visible (possibly even neglectable) This in contrast with a Sigma 17-35, which clearly shows aberations near the corners with the D2x
I have quite a few more images taken that day, but the breeze never died down untill the following morning. I took my time, though, and walked a few times up and down the curb to get the best angle. The difficulty was to find the spot which allowed a decent view on both the sunset as well as the mountain. The time frame was pretty narrow, too. There are more to follow sooner or later.
Again, my thanks for the feedback and the info, very much appreciated indeed.

Let me start by saying congratulations. Even as someone who has spent hundereds of days in Rainier park and summited the mountain several times, this is probably one of the top-10 displays of light I've ever seen captured near the mountain. The framing of the peak here is simply a magnificent act of god and you were lucky to be there at that moment.
I'll start with the technical stuff first. It's soft as presented here, but if your full-res file looks good at 100%, you can rest assured that your issues are resizing/compression related. If you had a steady tripod mount, remote release, ect. camera shake couldn't be the problem. Possibly you're PS work degraded the quality minimally, but I can't even see any noise in the shot so it's not likely that it was a major factor. Wind could explain the soft grasses in the foreground. Ripples on the lake tell of at least a light breeze. And to touch on what Rashed mentions, F22 would have not made the image sharper. Actually, you had all the DOF you needed at F14 and at F22 defraction is softening your image even using the best lenses.
The asthetics of this scene were obviously off the charts, and this rendition looks beautiful. Still, I'm curious about any other compositions you may have found. Did you get anything with the clouds reflecting? Any others without that large muddy patch in the foreground? Did the breeze quiet down at all? I know the area well and know what Reflection Lake has to offer. There might have been better compositions still waiting along the shore? Even if not, this speaks for itself. A powerful, rare and memorable image.

Hi Dmet, Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it! As to your remark, I don't think it's an issue of right or wrong, and IMO, there's only one rule: There aren't any. There's only a subjective feel, and that you don't like the tones is something I can understand. Its your subjective opinion, after all. In my subjective opinion, the tones in this image are quite close to what I wanted them to look like. No rules can be broken here, because there aren't any...:)

this is a nice composition which i do like but also i do agree with Jeroen Wenting ,you WAY overdid the Photoshop and this is a photograph which comes under certain rules and methods there fore you are not really right when you said "the exaggerated tones are maybe a bit overdone, but I did that intentionally, rather than by mistake" we can not go and do wrong things and then come back and say " ntentionally" any way i did like this image and wish you all of the best.

With landscapes its always pleasure to view them in panorama format, said that on of the most beautiful landscape of the famous ,Ansel Adams ,shot in portrait format.
The top creative sky and the mountain, certainly fit within your decision, and balanced the foreground elements.
One does not need enlarge the thumbnail to see it beauty, those moment of surrounding atmosphere one can not ignore.

Hi Arthur, thanks for your comment. I noticed the lack of sharpness in the foreground too, but the camera was well supported when I shot this. All I can think of is a slight boo-boo in the postprocessing. Another option, a less likely one, is a sudden draft during the exposure.

Woo-hoo! Beautiful capture of this peak, to those of us who live around it refered to simply as 'the Mountain'. I think it's looked at as almost a living friend as almost every view of it is unique, different in some way than the last, dependent on time of day, season, perspective, weather.
You have really done it justice here with so many elements and colors, and what often(here in the NW) adds interest to it's view, accompanying clouds. Nice piece Hugo.

Hi Sal, thanks for your elaborate description. I might just follow your suggestion and post a vertical panoramic image; I do have a similar one which would serve that purpose. The time frame has yet to be decided on, though...:)
I'm not sure which caused the unsharpness in the foreground. I figured an f/14 (taken from the EXIF) should've prevented that. And The camera was well supported, too. (besides, a camera shake would blur the mountain too, which isn't the case. Possibly it's a matter of overprocessing the Raw file.
The lack of detail in the trees was rather difficult to prevent, as the contrasts "on set" were still quite hard. I exposed this one on the mountain. A similar shot, exposed on the trees had a rather blown out sky. There are details in the 1:1 file than in the resized version.

Me and Mt. Rainier will always have wonderful memories-taking family trips to go tubing down the snowy slopes. This is beautiful, makes the mountain appear so magical and glorious-esp. with the way the clouds have spread themselves around the mountain, but still leaving space between themselves and it(almost like an order from the Mt. itself for them to do that.) I have Heavenly music playing in my head while viewing this image. The reflection in the foreground of course is just an added bonus. Nicely done~

The portrait orientation is great, the colors are vivid but not over-sat., and that miraculous little patch of still water in the foreground is killer! This shot is almost provocative enough to make this city boy sleep on the ground in a tent. Hugo, rather than sharpening the image, possibly a repost as a vertical panoramic, if thats possible here. I do agree there is a lack of sharpness but not only in the foreground but there is a lack of detail in the trees as well that is more than likely due to the shrinking of the image for Usefilm than OoF in the original shot.
