Amazing scale (240 feet!) It is difficult to get the proper impression of height from the photo. Where are those human figures when you need them? :-)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm Annie, a word of caution. I think you mean gloves with the fingers out right? That is what I wore when I was shooting a stuck school bus in a blowing snowstorm, and WOW, my fingers hurt for couple years til it effects of frostbite left.........be careful pal!!
Its easy to see how you are caught up in this falls, it is beautiful!!
Years ago I saw Niagara Falls in the winter, before I had a good camera/camera skills, would love to go back now...time will tell!!

Ann, this is truly motion frozen in time. This has been an atypical weather year for our area also with considerable flooding and remarkably warmer than usual for the SF Bay area. Maybe all our cold went to the north side of the CA/OR border!

Great series and great to see you back too! Looking at the the thumbnails of the frozen waterfalls, I first thought they were slow shutter speed (duh Rina, the titles are self-explanatory)... :))
I love that you provide so much background info of your images. Not only do you treat us to some spectacular photography, but you also have us right there standing beside you, freezing our butts (and fingers) off!
Boy am I glad to be in Brissy right now though. I'm SO over the whole 'cold weather' thing these days. Hope the fingers have recovered well for you!
Simply beautiful imagery Ann. Cheers Rina

Hi Ann, Another of your EXCELLENT icy shots! I love your composition here again, starting with the branches on the left bottom, continuing with the tiny trees and the different rock layers, finally going/falling down with the water and ending in the frozen "pool" :-) . Outstanding, Ann. Best regards and thanks for your nice comments again. Mireille

I'm from Malta so I don't get to see any snow or ice or really cold weather. First time I was in minus zero conditions was last christmas in the UK - this was my first experiment with snow, i don't think it turned out that well - http://www.usefilm.com/image/1026970.html
Anyway you managed to freeze me staring at my laptop for a couple of minutes. Very impressing image - i don't think I will ever see anything like that - how much was the temperature?
Awesome shot btw, better go and have another look at it!

Thank you Hugo for taking the time to drop by and comment on this image.
Believe it or not there were quite a number of photographers there that day all fighting for tripod space to get the best angle for their shots. Only the die hard very keen photographers braved the freezing temperatures in the icy blizzard windstorms (up to 60mph winds) were there to get their photos. There were very few regular tourists just there to view the falls. The deep freeze ice storms which hit Oregon that week is quite a rare occurrance. It did snow on the night this photo was taken but once it snows the ice melts soon after from the moisture as it warms up with the snowfall. It takes a very cold and very dry spell for the falls to freeze over a period of time as the mist from the falls layers and freezes over time.
As for the warm green...Oregon has a very high rainfall and is a very wet, green and mossy state. Even in freezing temperatures you will find the unusually heavy mossed trees and rocks right next to snowy and iced over areas. One of the strangest sights I have seen here are the bare trees which have lost all their leaves for the winter and their bare branches and trunks are now covered in rich green moss from all the rainfall. In particular the Willamette Valley grows a lot of moss as (apart from the rare freeze) it doesn't get cold enough to snow here so allows for enough warmth for the moss to grow even though the temps are still quite chilly. It makes for very pretty saturated green areas but also can get quite depressing with all the grey skies day after day, week after week and month after month.
Thank you again for dropping by.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ann, Spectacular view of the frozen waterfall, weird enough, a fairly common sight, but not often photographed, I think. (At least not nearly enough, as the view sure is spectacular). Reading your story, it must've been exteremely cold, and even though the greyis blue tone of the ice in the pond does not suggest thaw, the saturation in the green looks a bit warm. What surprises me is the lack of snow. (having said that, I've never been to Oregon, so I really wouldn't know) I like the composition, placing the waterfall to the right of the centerline, allowing the viewer to slide down towards the grey, icy rubble on the left. Good choice, and a very solid shot.
Cheers,
Hugo

You're a couple of hours out Ray. It's only just after 8pm here - not 10pm as you thought.
The curve like area of white to the left was another flow of water going into the pool and it was frozen over too. As a matter of fact there were people skating on a smooth flat area (in their regular shoes) just to the left of what I could get into the image and they were so tiny against that hill of frozen water. It was so massive to see in person I wish I had got a better shot with the people in the photo too. Oh well I'm happy with what I did get.
WOW you sure do have the graveyard shift to be at work at 4am. Keep warm over there and don't work too hard.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hiya my sweet Ann it's 3.45 am on Tuesday here and I am at work. It's approx 9.45pm on Monday where you are. I'm not busy just now so I'll comment on this fantastic frozen waterfall.
I am so pleased that you have a pair of gloves now for this scene looks so cold and bitter. The falls themselves look magnificent and very impressive; I love the greeness of the vegetation but tell me are they more minor falls to the left where the flashes of white are or extensions of the main falls? Well done to you my brave girl out in all that cold. 'See' you again soon sweetie, hugs of warmth and best wishes....Ray
PS with staff interuptions this has taken me 15 mins to type.....4am here 10pm there???????

You know, in this frozen condition, it DOES look like a horse tail!!!! I like the contrast of white and green, the little wavelets of white against the green of the rock on the left of the falls - of great visual effect. And the pool must look like a meeting of shapes! All three postings of frozen waterfalls have been great! Gabriela

Looks like it was the victim of a very nasty arctic blast - completely frozen in time. Like the previous image, I really love the different shades of green. It's a wonderful contrast to the frozen falls.

Splendid frozen falls and pool, Ann! Love the contrast between the ice and the green surroundings, the rounded rocks look like a landscape from China! Great composition - love the smaller frozen flows adding white accents and repetition - beautiful!

Thanks for your comments and inquiries MIchael. I have only been in this area for a few months but have visited these falls a number of times cause they are close to where I live. Apparently this has been a rare year with this deep freeze we had a few weeks ago. It doesn't normally freeze up like that every year. When it freezes like this they close most if not all the tracks as they ice over and are too dangerous to hike and also there is danger of large chunks of falling ice. I believe the only falls viewable at the time were Multnomah and Horsetail as they are right on the road. There are, however, those extreme sports people who climb the sheer ice cliffs which form on the rock faces. I saw some but didn't get back in time to photograph them as they climb up and down those ices faces really fast in that sort of weather. Although I did get a slight case of frost bite on my fingers taking these photos I feel lucky to have seen this sight which doesn't occur often. I didn't mind the sufferring to get these shots.
Thanks for dropping by Michael.
Cheers - Ann :)

Ann -- Wow! It is hard to believe that Horsetail Falls could freeze like that! Given the amount of water that flows over that Fall and its velocity. That must have been a very, very cold spell! Does it get that cold often in that area? What was the trail like up to Pony Tail Falls? Would it have been passable?
