I like this angle, the glow from the church complements the moon... There's many great images of the eclipse and I find your to very original. Well seen and captured. Lee

This is effective but Detroit has grander ruins which better convey the melancholy feel of an extinguished city.

Matthew, Another great shot of Detroit, I like the sepia effect in this one, it works well. After reading the comments on the image, you stated you would like to find some graffiti next time your there, Here?s a link to the Graffiti pictures in the same site I sent in my last comment to you www.detroityes.com/art/03cave_entrance.htm , (you have to click on the picture to get to the next image in that site) I have no affiliation with that website, it?s just that it?s my ?home town? and so I find it interesting, I hope you do to. I would love to find some really good graffiti myself, it?s just I don?t like going down there alone. ~Mike

Yep, one of my best friends from elementary school became a drug dealer and went crazy. He's only 18, younger than me. He's been into jail many times and has a bad temper whenever he doesn't get his way. I'm afraid he's gonna end up like that because he doesn't want to change. He was a normal church going boy at one time. If it can happen to him, then it can happen to anyone. Both of the homeless men I talked to were on drugs. The one man was on crack and the other was smoking a joint. The man on crack was far gone. He had one eye, about 3 teeth, a wooden leg, and hasn't been indoors in 3 years. The guy on marijuana was nice and we talked to him for a while. Thanks for the reply

Yup..sad..the reason most of them are homeless is because of the disease of addiction...it's a disease of the mind. I myself have the disease but I'm in recovery. Some people, however, get tripped up by the disease...or just don't know how to get help...untreated {12 step program, not medication} it will make a person go insane. Every year on New Years Day I go downtown to this church where we hold a party for the homeless. they get to eat a good meal have dessert and dance all day to upbeat, funky music....some are really far gone...and some are very warm, gentle, intelligent..but lost people.
The way I see it...we are all one in the same..we just walk different paths. Individual approach, Universal maze.

Ya, you're right. It's best to ignore homeless people. After that incident, I used my telephoto lens from a distant place if I wanted to take pictures of people on the streets. I usually ignore them, but I'll never talk to one again. Most of them are messed up in the mind. Thanks for the advice!

So I just got back from Detroit, which makes Cleveland look like the Hamptons. I took many pictures of the Michigan Central. I heard that they are going to tape a movie there this weekend. Everyone waved at me when I was there. Maybe they thought I was part of the movie crew. I almost got into a fight with a homeless man. It all started when a homeless man smoking a joint tried to sell me stuff, so I told him I'd give him $2 to stand in a picture and he happily did so. Then he was going to ask his buddies to do so also, even though I didn't ask him to. His one buddy got mad and I thought he was gonna pull out a knife. Anyways, I also came across some other photographers taking pictures of abandoned buildings. They said they went to the roof of this one abandoned building. I think it was the broadrick building. I also went to 8 mile road to take ghetto pictures. I think Detroit is hopeless.

interesting shot & composing. Actually, it would be great to have that towers in full view... so probably a more wide angle lens would fit better. just an idea though ;-)

I've never been to that side of town. I've only been to Detroit once in my entire life and that was contained to the downtown area east of 75. I think I'll go for a drive and look for pictures, although I will beware of gangs.

Oh man...the whole frikkin city is abandoned.. All you have to do is show up....the west side is where you'll find most of the graffiti ...because thats gang terf {Latin Counts}...probably don't wanna run around there with a camera. I do love this city beautiful french architecture...shame it's so desolate..never recouped after the riots of 67...

I really enjoy taking pictures like this. My next photo mission will be in the industrial area of Cleveland and maybe Detroit. If I use a polarizer and a red filter, it does a lot for the contrast. Cleveland and Detroit have industrial areas that are covered in graffiti and rising smoke.

Hi Matthew,
no comments yet? What a shame!
I really like the dark, haunting industrial city look here. you combine several interesting building to an interesting cityscape composing. sky and lighting fits very well. I would love to see this picture with a bit more wide angle though... the cropping on the upper area is a bit harsh so I have the feeling that something's missing.
aynway, like the style a lot. take care, thilo

The next time I get a full day off, I plan on going to Detroit, but I'm not from the area, so I have to look for things on my own and that can take too much time. I'm from Akron Ohio so it takes 3 hours to get there. Can you tell me where any graffiti or abandoned buildings are that would be good for pictures?
