I would like to see this sized larger, but from what i can see,i like very much!...the gate/fencing makes it for me...good perspective and composing...the large tree provides a natural framing...moody with the dense fog...makes me feel melancholy and invigorated at the same time...thanks for commenting to me...regards,gayle (will check out your music as i have much admiration for musicians...my own tastes are very eclectic)

Wonderful image, the action is caught perfectly, its warm and grainy just like a humid summer day in Alabama , good vision. I with you on this duo tone violet channel processing. I recently did some sepias and honestly they were a bit standard and boring, great job. Cheers, Dustin.

This is what kids' portraits should be. One that captures his personality, shows him feeling. Many portraits are so stiff and contrived -- I've met very few children who are like that naturally (though they are out there).
The hair, glazed eyes trying to open, and expression really make the picture. This is one to remember the kid.

Cute little guy. This shot is a perfect case where a fill flash is required to take the face out of shadow and make the highlights a little softer. The sun would still have provided a nice rim or hair light as it was pretty bright.
Next time turn on the flash, you might also want to use a slower film, something like 100 when you shoot outside in bright sun. It will give you more options in aperture so that you could blur out the background a little by opening up a bit more.

Very cool - I'll admit I'm biased 'cause this fits "my style" of photography very nicely - this is the sort of shot I'm a little bit jealous of ("Damn, I whish I had taken that one first!"). I agree that this crop is much better, with the fence coming out of the tree, and the left side is just right with the branches just coming to a stop. I'd feel very at home there. Nice shot.

A little too contrasty for my taste. But, on the other hand, it made me look at it. The expression is good. Kind of a "hurry up" or "bored" or possibly "lost in thought" kind of look.
It shows the kid at play, without any pretensions, which is really good.

cool grab shot Toby..tighten the frame behind him..right crop just up to him... that part of the frame has no value to this image....good job and nice capture..just fix it up a bit for more impact.....

while I clearly understand Alex's impressions.....I have to agree with you Toby..this is very reminicent of the 50's/60's struggle and is a very suggestive image of an ideal that really failed unfortunately losing a great man of the century due to the stupidity and ignorance of the human race.....I looked at the color version and it is complacent compared to this....Ballsy image....Big balls...

cool idea Tobias..little too high key for this subject.....not over the top but really close...also crop the right to center him off, this position is a bit unsettling especially with this treatment......good to be adventuresome.....

Alex, Thanks for the advice. I tried several variations on this image and didn't feel that sepia delivered the feel I was looking for. It also came across as a tad generic to me in sepia. I made this image a little harsh while trying to retain other elements of childhood because I was thinking alot about racial tensions as we grow up and the eminent tainting of ideal harmony. This hue makes me feel like "Alabama" for some reason and it adds a little stump in the thought process of cute little kiddy pic. In some way I think I succeeded judging by your reaction. It made you think about the image for a second. That works for me.

cut into him to much on this...background shadows on wall is distracting....and needs fill his right side...great looking subject however....dont shoot this guy so tight...he seems quite animated and you should try to get some of that in the frame to support his expressions....
