Well caught and composed, considering how tough it must be to grab such a fast-moving subject! I'd loved to have seen the skateboarder's face, but you can't have everything!

Simple but effective shot, Dan. The angle prevvents the composition from being static, and the details of the clouds above add to the image. It definitely has the feeling of the falling dusk, but I also find the image a bit empty. The lamp post acts as an eyecatcher, but IMO, that's not enough to take this out of the ordinary. The shot is effective in terms of composition and mood.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Dan, Good capture of textures and tones, and I think the rather minimalistic composition works well here. The fact that I ahve no clue what I'm looking at only adds to the appeal of this shot. Mabye a tad more space on top, allowing for the green to pass above the metal ring and whachamacallit could've balanced the composition a bit better.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks for the comments.

John, thank you for the constructive critique. I see what you mean about the power lines, right in the middle. Sometimes I'm in a rush to take a photo, but I'm getting better at slowing down and looking at everything in the viewfinder.

Taking up your challenge Dan, for a meaningful critique.

At first view a competent picture with reasonable control of the exposure and use of the space within the frame.

However, I think you could have added more impact. The power lines sit mid-frame. A slightly higher or lower view point could improve the dynamic of the composition. Have you tried flipping the picture right to left. I think it reads better that way.

All critiques are subjective but I have noticed that pictures that are warmer in tone seem to attract more comments on Usefilm.

Regards John

Hi Dan, Had to think about this image for a while; the (flash) light from the side is spectacular; it empahsises the slant in the bank, but also illustrates the direction of the course of action very well. This makes it quite powerful.

I do think the division of the frame, with the large dark area in the lower part of the image is a bit too much. Also, I would consider concising the view a bit; the overview of the setting, gradually fading out the structures to near black provides a lot of information that is peripheral to the subject and the tension created by the things to happen, thus reducing the power of the image. I realise this is very much influenced by taste and other subjective criteria. I fiddled around with your photo a bit; hope you don't mind. Per attached a slightly altered but severely cropped version.

Cheers,

Hugo

You've done a good job with exposure extremes here, despite you unfamiliarity with really good Nikon equipment. (no, just kidding, really.) I like the obvious perspective and diagonal leading lines, ending at the vanishing point on the horizon. The dramatic sky, echoed in the reflected water, adds to the effect. I can't tell if the water is runoff from the road or a canal, but it doesn't matter as far as it working as a photograph.
