Interesting that you posted the cancer series in reverse-numerical order, saving this "first" one for last. Had you started here, it might have shaded the way we looked at the other less tense shots; but in this progression, you give us this very visceral (and beautifully lighted) expressive moment of anticipation, tension, even fear. I love the box of sunlight (?) immediately over the subject's shoulder, and its presence implies a place (and a context) outside the artificial netural-zone of a studio, and places it in a more real and everyday place, giving it even more immediacy.

Wow--the stark contrast is enhanced by the stoney grain to the texture. This one hits me right between the eyes, and then right to the heart.

A very powerful portait. Strong use of light and shadow. The light feels natural, adding to the sense that we are witnessing something real and felt, rather than posed. The title and photo information add to the depth of feeing here. Wow.

Wow--interesting contrast to the previous post. I'd suggest even combining them for an interest "agony and the ecstacy" diptych. Can't wait to see where this series goes... Thanks for sharing it.

A visceral pose, with enhanced starkness due to the lack of color (which also focuses us on the composition even more). I also find an interesting angle of light here, causing the outer area to be brigher while the center is a heart of darkness. All of these elements come together when one reads the title. The number implies a series, and I am anxious to see more of this series.

How did I miss this one? A very touching portrait. I actually like how the blown highlight of her hair blends with the background; technically that's wrong, but for me it works. This feels very spontaneous and deeply felt.

...and by love! This is a photo you will always cherish. I think maybe some use of 'levels' would be good in this one Scott, too much light.
Good job in capturing her expression, Lori

I also did a version based on a grayscale version with masks and layers to even out the overall tone but I prefer the high-contrast version.
