These blend in really well in nature. In the morning when i wake up my lizard is about this color, 1/2 hr under his sun lamp and he turns a really light color!

Thanks Alberto. The reason the mouth is so big is that the zoo keeper was throwing carrots into it :-). He'd call the hippos, show them the food and they'd open their mouths to be fed.

It is one of the most impressive pictures I have ever seen....it is a spectacular view of this hipopotamus...and of course I must add that the technique of the picture itself is very good in my opinion. Congratulations... by the way...how do you get such a big size to show it in here..??

Hi Nadia, the South Africa trip was a honeymoon - a destination my wife wasn't aware of until she got on the plane in Perth :-).
The lion experience wasn't at all frightening, a car's a safe place to be. We camped and hiked in the African bush - there were wild elephants all around, and canvas doesn't offer much protection :-O - that's frightening!. I have lots more photos of that trip here: http://www.hartill.net/Africa/
Kangaroo Island is not far down the road from here, so we take overseas relatives there. We've done it twice and will no doubt go there again one day.
Thanks for the feedback on the photos.
Cheers, rob

Nice capture of her ambiguous pose. That experience must have been more than a little frigtening! Was your time in Africa a holiday, or that spent at Kangaroo Island, Australia? Either way you've captured spectacular wildlife at both, well done!

Brilliant shot Rob! I can't wait to get down to Goolwa again myself, maybe to do some jet skiing but definitely to the barrages where you can always find pelicans feeding! Really good focus and pleasing crop. Well done!

Thanks for the comments. It's always the case - carry the tripod - see nothing, don't carry it and there's always something to shoot :-)

The composition and colour are phenomenal, however I would have done two things differently: 1) i would have opened the aperature wider if possible for a narrower DOF, and 2) used a tripod to get rid of the wiggles. Keep shooting, Rob!

A tad more focus would have been nice, but not possible under the circumstances. I was happy to capture the bird in its natural environment, and I'm glad you like it.
