thanks so much for the compliment. the issue here is not capture: this was shot on film. this image is a scan of an 8x10 silver print. the problem i find in digital imagery is the failure of digital images to retain the extreme subtlety of shadow detail. a silver print can have maybe a full stop of detail hidden in deep shadow. in digital, black is black. the print of this image has very little total blackness, and though this was a poor scan, i see the same problem even in professional prints.

amazing..i like this image..hard to describe the feeling when looking at it. cant imagine the feeling when looking at the original print. the problem that i face most in digital is highlight detail. apparently the dynamic range of the higher res digital backs/slrs are wider...any thoughts?

Amazing, James. Not only for the positioning of each of the pictures, but for the whole work. Why is it so appealing? Because it shows what we like, and don't, on people: expressions, emotions. This is an image that communicates because of both its simplicity and complexity, just like everybody. Let's say the principle is simple (B&W), but the inside is complex (lots of expressions, moods, details that compose an individual's personality). You were trying to reach an icon. Well, I've picked this one from your work. But don't stop convinced by my opinion. I'd like to pick others. Ahn, sorry for rating it, but I couldn't resist. by the way it's the highest rate I've ever given. And it really deserves it. Regards, Jose Azevedo.

carlheinz, thank you for your praise, yet i am most grateful that you share my understanding of the difference between a picture's power and the various details that contribute to that power. far too much attention is paid to the technical aspects of photography, as if mastering those might make one a better photographer. in fact, there's a certain base level of technical skill necessary, and from there it's a matter of refining one's ability to capture a powerful image and not damage it too much in the darkroom.

Kind of bizarre, that you have to explain your thoughts and intentions. I think sometimes the viewers just seek to give advices to create a perfect picture. Catchlight here, contrast there and so on. For ME the most important question is: Do I touch my audience? Did I create a mood? Will the viewer keep my picture in mind somehow? Talking about this picture. I LOVE IT. I love how you kept distance from the viewer, but the way she looks at me blows my mind. That's the kind of picture where I don't care about some funky details. The impression of the couple is simply FANTASTIC. Highest ratings and this is MY PICTURE OF THE DAY!!! Cheers! Carlheinz

Perhaps your translation to digital is flawed. I could imaging that this is a really good photo. I do get excellent shadow detail and my digital camera is far from professional. Does your scanner show you a histogram? If so, when you scanned a photo, make sure the exposure you use puts the histogram close to the right edge (but not touching or you loose hightlight details). Once it is scanned, you can open up the shadow details with levels or curves. Now, I'm not saying this will equal your print but it should be much better.

thank you, irma. i'm a writer by trade, so titles matter a lot to me. this title is a rather bitter pun: the picture is of a drainage culvert deep in a little-known wood in cincinnati. idyllic, lovely, except the water is polluted.
i've been prowling much more lately, but mostly in the woods. the other dark pictures are old, last summer, last fall: rolls that sat around because i was too busy to develop them. do you make pictures other than the series you're posting?

this one looks best if i push my chair back from the computer and takes the whole thing in from a few feet away. You might guess that i like this sort of image quite a lot. The textures and darkness appeal to me. Close up this image loses something and it might be from the scan. i don't know if it's too soft? Not enough contrast or too much? lack of tonal range? i just know it isn't an image i can crawl into. It's rather skin deep. (wow, isn't THAT a helpful comment?) regards and goodnight..kat~

wow, James! Not only are you back, seems you are Staff Choice du Jour! And seems the staff has great taste as well! i love looking up the stairs to the blowing door covering and the bright light. i have a feeling of anticipation..i'm going somewhere better just visually climbing those stairs and being invited through the curtain. i like the camera movement here. It crates nice soft light and shadows. Nice to see you again, James..don't be a stranger! kat~

No.. so far this series doesn't feel entirely opaque, to be sure. It's good not to give everything away, I am sure you know this.
These first two images you've posted are interesting and I hope the series continues. The subject you've chosen and how you represent it resonates with me, mainly because of certain dreams and experiences I've had..
I am interested in seeing where this series leads..
