Yes, the DOF is a little deceiving without knowing the location & setup.

Distance to the bird was about 6' or so...the trees in the background probably 50-60' away.

Thanks for the comments.

James,

Do you think that it would be better without the blur in the wings? I mean a complete freeze.

I may have to try this again this weekend.
Thanks for the tip.

Pat,

get ready for a really technical set-up

Red serving tray, about 1/2" water.
Dr. Pepper bottle with a pin hole poked into the bottom. Hung on a string about 6" above tray.

I was using an 25mm ext. tube on with a normal lens. Focusing was tough.
Lighting, started with SB800 but it started to over heat, so I switched to my Alien Bee B800.

Being that I had ALOT of light, I set my shutter speed up to 1/500 and everything seemed to work out OK.

oh...and lots and lots of pics.

Great first attempt. Shooting a white animal is hard with a dark background.

Keep them coming.

Great job Adam.

Looks like you got the shutter speed down perfect for this shot.

I love the cropping/framing of this shot. DOF adds a great perspective too. Great shot.
