Bob,
This is fantastic. The composition is excellent, and the sharpness is remarkable considering it was hand-held at 1/100th (even if it was one of several taken rapidly). So much for the 1/focal length rule!

Wow, great color and detail! Excellent control of depth of field as well...you managed to blur the branches a bit without sacrificing sharpness on the cardinal. Nicely done.

Rex,
Nice crisp capture of the cactus. Looks very prickly! One thought...you might try shooting at f3.5 (or lower if you have another lense that is faster than your 18-55mm) to blur the background a bit more. I think it would help the cactus really stand out nicely.

Interesting shot. I think the dead, twisted tree is a worthwhile focal point, but the twigs/branches in the foreground are a little distracting to me. Also, you might want to rotate and crop a bit to get the horizon perfectly level.

Larry,
Nice shot, and good timing to get the cardinal with it's head turned. One question though, did you do any post-processing work in PhotoShop? I ask because there seems to be a slight color cast and general out-of-the-camera feel to this. Not sure about your Sony, but all of the Canons I have used require some post-processing to bring the picture to life (or at least back to where it should be).
I hope you don't mind, but I spent a few seconds adjusting the levels and contrast in PS, and also increased the saturation just a touch to bring out the red in the cardinal.

Very nice long exposure shot. The intensity of the colors, and the reflections are great. It's amazing what Velvia can do for a sunrise/sunset. A good sharp scan as well.

Nice landscape. The colors are great, although the clouds might be a little over-exposed. I usually check the histogram on days such as this, just to make sure.

Great clouds in the background, with nice pastel colors! A couple of thoughts, though... I would crop a bit off the bottom, as it represents a large portion of the image without any detail or color. Also, both hills seem to have rather pronounced halos. Could be the camera, or it could be the result of over-sharpening...or most likely a combination of the two.

Looks cold, especially with all the blue tones and only a trace of warmth left from the sun. Gives me a feeling of loneliness as well. Definitely moody.

Nice shot. Those eyes are beautiful. Also, good control of DOF to keep the whole head sharp while letting the background blur. I might have cropped it a bit tighter though.

Wow, what great colors! I'm on the fence about the rock. When I'm close to the screen, and I can see just a bit of detail in it, I like it. When I step back a little (and thus lose the detail), it seems a little too big, and dark. Just my $.02

David,
Very nice shot. I like that you included the little sliver of water just below the horizon, it really adds to the layer effect of the image. If there was one little thing I would change...I wish there was just a bit more space between the reflection and the bottom of the image, but of course I don't know if that was possible in this particular situation. Still, that is a very minor nit-pick in what is an overall fantastic shot.

Excellent shot, I love the reflection and the colors. Also, you did a great job handling DOF. The last (and only) time I was there it was hazy every day. Very disappointing, but this makes me want to go back and try again!

Jose,
I think you have found an interesting place to photograph. The old houses look like they have outstanding potential. But for me, this shot doesn't quite work for two reasons. First, and most important, is the car. You may have been trying to contrast the new with the old, but it just feels odd to me. Second, the sky is pretty blown out. Probably just a tough time of day to shoot. Maybe try right around sunrise or sunset. I would keep working on this location if possible since it looks so promising. Keep at it!

Since you didn't specify, not sure if the darkness at the top is due to a polarizer or PS. Either way, I like it. I think it adds balance to the shot. In my opinion, without the darkness the sky would be dull. The only thing I'm not sure about is the relatively central position of the horizon. Not saying it's bad, just not sure.

I like the contrast of the rusty birdhouse/feeder with the seemingly black and white trees, but it seems overwhelmed. Maybe the detail/color just didn't show up enough in the scan? Composition is excellent. Maybe a bit overexposed though?

I like what you were attempting here, but it doesn't quite work for me. Shooting directly into the sun can be very challenging. Usually it results in the photo being underexposed, but in this case, most of the shot is well exposed while the sun is overexposed. Also, the lens flare is a bit distracting. Still. I like that you are trying something different. Keep at it!

Strange that this photo has so many views without a comment. A very different shot of a pet. not focusing on the face...I like it. The paws remind me of an old (cat) friend of mine, whose paws would clench in his sleep, as if he was chasing down mice. Looks like it might be a bit over-sharpened (especially in the light hair in the top center), but otherwise I think it's great.

Wow, completely different that the "weird rats" photo. I definitely like the other version better. I know, intellectually, that this should be a very tender photo/moment, but it seems very harsh. I like that you decided to experiment with this shot.
