i almost went there this month to participate in a workshop with nachetwey. this makes me wish i had gone. it's too bad the sky doesn't have more color in it but the orange of the robes is fantastic. i'll have to come back and dig through your portfolio later. how long were you there? did you run into any access issues?

wow. your tonal range is outstanding as is the detail in the stone of the house. as was already mentioned, nice job with the cloud behind the tree. i can't think of anything to do that might improve it. it's right on the money as it is.

leanne, there are 2 photos in my portfolio here from the eddie: 'it's a long way down' and 'big water'. the 'big water' photo is bruce irons on his winning wave. the photo 'relaxed' is from pipeline during that same trip.
i may be heading over next month for the banzai betty women's pipe contest. still working out the details on that one.

tri-x is so awesome. good tones in the feather but the snow looks just a bit gray. around the tip of the feather it seems just a bit soft but that could just be the scan. i like the low angle.

there's something missing jim i'm just not able to pinpoint it. the trestle is a great lead in for the eye but the post in the lower left is a distraction for me. is the big white spot an early moon rise? i think 2 things would benefit this image.
1) getting a little bit of a higher angle, if possible. i think seeing more of the tracks and train would be good.
2) getting the train a little earlier in the frame. i'm guessing it was heading away from you.

Maurizio, thanks. There is actually a companion image to this one that I should post. The only difference being that he is paddling out rather than riding the wave. I'll see if I can get it up this evening.

Looks like you were at the Wild Animal Park. Was this on the photo truck or at the giraffe feeding spot? As Ben said, a little fill flash would have helped.

Not too happy are they?
A little more bounce flash and less of a head on would have gotten rid of the shadows in back of them. You may also want to try Fuji NPH or NPZ next time around.

maurizio, i was actually almost a 1/2 mile away standing on the edge of a cliff about 60 feet above the water. this was one of the smaller waves of the day. occassionally, sets would pass by where the whitewater was almost at eye level.

robert, thank you.
to be honest, you can't be out at someplace like pipeline (where this photo was taken) and not 'be the wave'. you would be chewed up and spat out. there is a power in the water that you don't feel many other places.
when you started with dismayed, i got a little worried. thank you for your appreciation.

maurizio, i body surf as it keeps me in shape better for the water shooting but i'm definitely not a hard core surfer. works to my advantage in some ways as i don't have to debate whether to surf or shoot. i just shoot.
water shooting is definitely not for everyone. you need a cool head and a very high comfort level in the water. lots of things going on around you all at once.
i know the malloys from a distance. hoping this year i can get into their moonshine art festival.

jim, thank you. yes i was in the water. i much prefer shooting from there than from the beach. unfortunately, this photo was from my only water session while i was in hawaii. the surf was much to big the rest of the time, 20-25', sometimes bigger. the day this photo was taken it was around 12'.

matt, nice capture on a peak moment. he looks just a tad soft though. tripods aren't necessarily needed for surf photos unless you've got some big glass. if you don't have the big glass, try to get as close as you can. wade into the water if you need to and pay attention to the horizon. remember, you can always straighten it after the fact if you need to.

sam, great angle. the bodyboarder looks a bit soft. if you could position yourself a bit more to the right and a tad closer to the wave, you'd cut down the glare but still get the awesome blue of the sun shining through the wave with the surfer in silhoutte.
man, i wish i had water that clear and blue with the waves to match. you're making me jealous.

nice jim. i've been wanting to try a few like this for quite some time. the b&w gives it a way different feel. did you have the camera mounted on anything? or just hand holding it? looks like it was shot from the driver's side?

i have a roll coming back this week, my first with hie. i shot it at 800 with a 25 filter based on the recommendations at dr5. david wood does most of my b&w and he's excellent, especially when i need chromes to turn into surfer. i'll post a few when i get them back later this week. if you wish to check him out, his website is dr5.com and i really cannot say enough good things about him.

playing around with infrared (color and b&w) quite a bit myself these days. which film were you using? hie or sfx? if it was hie, what did you rate it at? were you using a filter: 25, 29 or 87?
nice framing with the branches along the top. the branch coming in from the left side is a bit distracting. if you had moved to your left to have the sun at your back, what was the view like? i only ask because with a bit more sun the ir effect would have increased on the foliage.
