timothy, there was no crop. this is full frame and was taken with a 35mm lens. mike waggoner builds my housings for me.

thanks maurizio. i have one more from this perspective that i'll be posting later today. it's a little more abstract and i'm not sure how many here will get it but you will.

thanks everyone for your comments.

david, there is a bit too much magenta in the scan i know. the past few days have been really busy for me and i'm slightly water logged. attached is a version without so much magenta.

cheryl, yes i know brad. great guy. were you at the ventura stop of the california cup?

maurizio, this was shot on velvia 100F, rated at 200 and then push processed at +1. the sun was going down pretty quickly and i needed the extra stop to keep the shutter high.

There's something about a Holga. Great image Jim. Timeless and slightly dreamy. The flocking gulls really make this one.

nice feeling of motion given to the player. some of the highlights seem just a tad blown but they work. have you tried pushing the tri-x? good things happen to it with a +1 or even a +2.

maurizio this is awesome. catching him in silhouette was a great idea yet there's enough light to get detail on the machine. only one thing could possibly make this better... too bad there isn't a curl of smoke visible from the end of the cigarette. did you add the slight magenta tone? btw, am i correct in guessing that this is a printing press?

congrats on the surfer site posting.

i like the pulled back perspective. it's a view you don't see that often. bits look a bit soft but it could just be the white water spray in the foreground.

you're in my neck of the woods. nice job framing it not to get the homes on the cliff. great clouds in the sky. i'm going to take a guess that you got this over the past few days?

robert, i'm not exactly sure if its original use. there is (or was) a staircase in it that goes to the cliff top. right in front of it is an old concrete ring that used to be a salt water pool.

I have never understood how my friends on the East coast surf through the winter. I have a hard enough time with the water temp here in SoCal in the winter.

A couple of things jump out at me with this one. If you can, avoid the 'butt' shots. Seeing the surfer's face adds a bit more impact. I would have probably tried to frame him a bit more to the left so that the viewer would be able to see what the face of the wave was doing. Lets you know where he is going.

i almost went there this month to participate in a workshop with nachetwey. this makes me wish i had gone. it's too bad the sky doesn't have more color in it but the orange of the robes is fantastic. i'll have to come back and dig through your portfolio later. how long were you there? did you run into any access issues?

wow. your tonal range is outstanding as is the detail in the stone of the house. as was already mentioned, nice job with the cloud behind the tree. i can't think of anything to do that might improve it. it's right on the money as it is.

leanne, there are 2 photos in my portfolio here from the eddie: 'it's a long way down' and 'big water'. the 'big water' photo is bruce irons on his winning wave. the photo 'relaxed' is from pipeline during that same trip.

i may be heading over next month for the banzai betty women's pipe contest. still working out the details on that one.

tri-x is so awesome. good tones in the feather but the snow looks just a bit gray. around the tip of the feather it seems just a bit soft but that could just be the scan. i like the low angle.

i was at both. hopefully some of my pipemasters photos will be in the april issue of surfer. there was a deadline mixup on the march issue so none of my eddie photos made it.
