Hi,Arwa
What you ask actually called "focus lock":
First position the subject in the centre of your viewfinder, next press the shutter release button halfway to lock the focus at the distance where the subject is.As you press the button, you will hear a click or see the focus indicator light up on the LCD.After that reposition the subject so that if is off-centre on your LCD.Check that neither you nor sibject move from your original position as you recompose the shot. Finally, press the shutter all the way down to take the picture.By locking the focus first, your subject will be in focus even though it is not centred. As you won`t be taking only subject centred images.Regards SAeed

Robert & Saeed your tips are priceless!!!

Im so lucky that i could have my privet tutors here at use film ;)

and Saeed detail r never annoying!! I want to learn and i wont unless i learn from my mistakes

1. smart thinking about leaving space around the subject then cropping it!! I tried it and it and the pic quality improved

2. it was a mistake to choose spot metering, i'll try it again today with matrix metering or on landscape mood.

3. one question! How could i set the metering on matrix and still have an out of focus background??? I don?t want to show the bike to be sharp? Would changing the lens help? I have the 18-70 mm....oops 4 questions :P

thank you all :)

I think as an element of great subject the only
thing is that of focus, the suggestion of Robert Currie of great help, when taking photos of people it is important to simplify the background which you did ,to keep the focus on the subject, the saying that the eyes are the window to the soul, so focus on them, try clicking with manual setting as many as you can and refer to some photography relevant to help you improve, most do , saying that to me if you do it the same with sharp focus, this of great subject, sorry for tooooo much annoying details, Saeed

Arwa, your camera has about a 6MP resolution, so you can leave quite a bit of space around your subject and do the tight cropping with software later and still have a high res picture. Also, you seem to have focussed on your brother's shoulder and on auto setting you don't have control of the aperture and hence the depth of field. You can see that there wasn't enough depth of field to get his face in focus. Your camera's auto focus should give you an indication (via a marker) of what it is focussing on and you should be able to select a different focus area. Try the same picture with different auto modes to explore which are best for various shots. It maybe would have been better to try this in Landscape mode for example which would have set the aperture smaller. Keep experimenting, you don't have to pay for film :-) Robert

Beautiful shot. Great composition, including the blurred bike. There's only a problem that stands out... the focus should be on the eye of the boy. It would greatly enhance the result. But anyway, really original portrait :).
