Oh dear, what a discussion here! :-O I think this is a lovely photo! A little bit unsharp, and the top looks strange. But I love the mood, and it's very interesting to know what it actually shows!

Interesting scenery. Referring to my picture: there is no manipulation on it, it's just the effect of long exposure.

My humblest apologies for posting my tirade on your first image, TJ. Yes, You are entirely welcome to Usefilm. It is a very special place to those who give its members due respect, and in this instance I did not adhere to my own philosophy. Andy's point is well taken. It's not as bad an image as the comments would seem to express. My rant about the frivolous Karma Chasers should have been directed to the forums section and my comments should have been restricted to suggestions about your image. As MarySue said, your mature response to our sidebar comments has won you some fans. Please continue to post. Please comment on the post of other people as well!
Regards, Sue
PS: Do you live near this location? I'm green with envy if you do. Good eye for seeing the potential here!

Tj M, I think several of us, myself included, used your image to make a point about something that has little to do with your work. There is a growing concern here about people who post quick compliments on an image, and give it high ratings, without any substantive comments about what makes it great. If you look back at some of these commentors records, they say essentially the same thing on every image. Their remarks appear to be an effort to grow Karma points rather than contribute to our community. While I don't think that anyone made unfair criticisms of your effort, it was unfortunate that we did it on your first post to Usefilm. I hope that you will continue to post images here. You will have an opportunity to recieve feedback, positive and negative, about your work, which you can use to improve as a photographer.
Another way to grow as a photographer is to take the time to look at images and submit your own comments about your impressions. By studying and critiquing the works of others, we all can learn how to improve our own work.
And Tj, WELCOME TO USEFILM!!

Hi TJ,
I think your image has a lot of potential and it doesn't look as bad as people are making it out to be. Though I must admit, there are a few things that you should've fixed before submitting this image. In Photoshop, make sure you do a color balance, fixing shadows, midtones, and highlights. In your image, I find the yellowish cast too excessive. If you are going for a warm sutset effect, a subtle tone of yellow will do, but having it overpower the rest of the color separation only makes it look muddy. You can lower that yellow cast value by going adjusting Hue/Saturation in photoshop. Choose the Yellow channel, and turn down the saturation.
Also, with the sky being cyan, it is quite obvious that there was a lot of haze that day. The best way to combat that is by using a polarizer. This should darken the sky, giving it a navy blue appearance and should also help remove the general cyan cast throughout the image.
When photographing a landscape like this, be sure to check all 4 sides of your frame! On the left side, you have a shack that's half cut off, on the right, you have a big tree that's half cut off, and on the top, you've cropped off the tip of a mountain.
If you intend to include something, be sure you do it fully, otherwise you leave us with an image that looks like it was done haphazardly. The only time it is advisable to crop off the edges of an object is to show it's enormity.
Also, be sure to use the Unsharpen Mask feature in Photoshop. With your image, using 130% Sharpen, 0.5 Radius, and 4 Threshold worked really well. Give it a try!
I've attached a sample from your image:

Sorry, TJ, I'm not meaning to 'pick' on your photo. I'm just tired of the karma chasers who don't spend two seconds looking at an image before putting the words "great image" on a photograph. You should be insulted that the first comment was placed within a minute of your posting. If you're not, then I'm sorry to have intruded. I felt an injustice had been done to you and to this community of photographers attempting to help one another.

And what makes this a GREAT image?
If the use of freeform makes it great, then there is NO bad photography and therefore no purpose for interacting with one another in order to try to improve.

Tj M, I am curious about a couple of things on your image. How did you get that sky color? It looks like you might have painted it in using PS or some other post-processing program. That even blue color does not look natural. I'm also concerned about the reddish stain that is above the bush on the far right. Is this part of the natural vegetatioh?
You were fortunate to be in one of the most beautiful valleys in the western US. Maybe a reshoot is possible?

composition: could be better. That mountain peak should not be cut off for example.
lighting: seems very flat, almost muddy. Had you been using film I'd say it was an ISO1000 or higher colour negative film.
Exposure: looks slightly underexposed. Especially that barn looks too dark.
Sharpness: lacking. Seems out of focus or not sharpened enough.
Raw camera output is rarely good enough for direct use. Learn postprocessing! You had a good idea but it was not quite properly executed and the result was not properly prepared for display.

Yo Karma Chasers!
This is an interesting photo, but the mountain being cut off in the background really takes it down a bit from great status. Also chopping some of that building off on the left side hurts it a little too.
The barn is well placed though!
