About I consider this one to be technically one of the best ones of the series and so I'd be very glad to read any comments.

Thanks a lot, Avi, for the explanation!

Then I may assume that I understood s little bit of it! I watched it another time, and I discover so many "little things" that now look to me just like supporting this main discrepancy of which the movie tells us. It is so dense though it looks very "easy" if one doesn't watch carefully.

What a work!

Nick

That EXACTLY is the essence of this movie. "Nayak", in Bengali (my language) means 'Hero'. And the fact that those who seem untouchable, larger than life, are often so much more "normal", even "fallible" than the average us. And how, in a matter of a few hours, the 'god' comes in contact with a more mortal 'commoner', who opens up his 'fallible' nature like a book !!

Thanks a lot for all that bunch of very very exciting info, Avi! And please: Suggest more, suggest more!!!!

What a spirit and how unfair it is that he isn't as widely known as others! Some of the biggest mental powers on planet did only one big mistake in their lives, I'm afraid. They weren't born in some of the places that are more "well known" to public, and thus the planet has only a small awareness of their work.

Anyway, the size of the funclub means nothing at all, and so I continue my journey following the work that you were kind enough to make me aware of.

That sequence, exactly that!, simply won't leave me in peace. The strength of the movie - for me in this state of getting to know him - is... its cool handling, almost acceptance, of the "formal" things, the "normal" things, the things that the superstar does while removing the own self from the circle of "ordinary" humans, and putting it onto some kind of untouchable podium to receive the glorification of exactly those "ordinary" humans. Until now, everything is alright! The VIP is untouchable, OK. But then! Then that sequence arrives, which says... that the "formal" isn't as "normal" even for the one that just accepted it as completely "normal"??? A denial of the own "yes"???

As you can imagine I *must* be very interested for such twisted questions, since as a mathematician I have to see parallels to the intrinsic contradictions in the very being of mathematics - Goedel and incompleteness. Perfection of formalism means then for the formalism to be.. imperfect??? Such questions are so unbelievably fruitable!!

I start suspecting that that sequence was not only some simple sentimentality - way more than a simple conflict in the own conscience.

And I start suspecting that for the time being I stand completely and utterly under the spell of his work!!!

Now, let's fill our glasses again, and let's see more!

Cheers to you Avi! And thank you so mauch again!

Nick

P.S.: As about killing scripts through translation... I knoe. That can be only faced by taking somebody that *knows" - really *knows* - both languages, and also taking time for a reasonable translation that preserves the spirit of the work. Oh well, as we all know time is money, and money is the only thing that is allowed to talk nowadays. ;-)

Also, pls note that many of his cinematography was done by himself, and some of the B&W shots in the movie are a PURE treat (e.g. the surrealistic dream sequence where he walks over a bed of currency notes, while skeleton hands holding telephones start ringing !!)

In fact, he was a versatile guy. Wrote his own script (his scripts are actually the BEST part of his work - pity you don't understand my language - translation almost always KILLS the script), gave background music (in some of his films) and also did some editing and sound mixing !! :)

Yeah, Nayak is one of MY favourites among his work. I wanted to see what you feel after watching that.. now I can be more confident about suggesting more.

As far as his shortened name, well, Mr. Ray passed away in 1992 after receiving an Honourary Oscar for lifetime achievement (Audrey Hepburn presented him the award ON his deathbed !!).. so I wouldn't know about that.. I am a kid compared to the great man.. both in stature AND in age LOL !!

I enjoyed already Nayak.. what can I tell you?

Extremely demanding work in all its simple appearance. Definitely not the kind of "light emotional amusement" with which we get bombarded everyday. I have to think about it, really, and then tell you more.

But already now a big fat thanks for introducing me into the work of Satyajit Ray.

All the best,

Nick

P.S.: BTW could it be that the name Satyajit is also abbreviated as Satya in India? I know a very sympathetic guy in Zürich and his name is Satya, that's why I ask.

I am glad to hear that, Avi! Such sincere exchange of views and thoughts is the best way for friendship indeed. Some day we'll be making our movie. BTW, the videos are here. I'll be watching the first tomorrow night.

How great to read about your journey! I wish you already now a fantastic time in India and a great, long, night party at your sister's wedding! (I drink to that already now! ;-)) My greetings to everybody there.

And not to forget! Do not dare to return back without at least 2734 photos! OK, that was too much, let's make them 2733. ;-)

Cheers!

Nick

Perhaps because it could have been home, Avi? Not the same but... somehow... the same. ;-)

OK, different city, different places, different views. And still that stage, of which you deal in your last few images, seems to make us converging to pretty much the same state.

Cheers,

Nick

Many many thanks for the nice, detailed comment, painsama. Indeed, it was perspective supported with leading lines what I thought of (technically).

Thanks a lot again and best wishes.

Thanks a lot for the nice and inspiring comment, Ian!

With "parabola-ish thing" beneath the clock, you must mean the white security lines on the platform?

Cheers,

Nick

I love the flow of the lines from the lower right corner into the picture. Beautiful leading lines, I'd say.

My best regards. :)

Yup.
Agreed. That clock and the parabola-ish thing beneath it.
Maybe it invites a reconfiguaration of what the space is, like sun over the hill or something
