Location City -  Deadvlei
State -  SOUTHERN NAMIBIA
Country - Namibia   Namibia
About Defying human logic and all degrading forces of nature, this camelthorn trunk seems to struggle to stay upright against all odds.

Deadvlei, once part of Sossusvlei, according to scientific theory was cut off by moving (windblown) sanddunes from the rest of Sossusvlei about 900 years ago. The big camelthorn trees was approximately 600 - 700 years of age at that stage. Cut off from the regular water supply of the main wetland the trees all died. Due to the lack of moisture and the extreme temparatures the hardwood cores of the big trees were preserved and many of them are still standing - skeletons of their former glory though. I spent a whole day from before sunrise until late afternoon in this magical place - it was like stepping back into time. While taking photos of the many shapes and textures, I was trying to see this place as it was 900 years ago. Every here and there, along the edges and bottomslopes of the dunes, the water of the extraordinary rainy season of 2006 brought some bright green growth - small pieces of evidence of the former glory of this place! I stood in awe and did not want to go. One sure thing - I'm going back!

This gives the feeling of a creature rising up. A great composition, dear Joggie!:)

Thanks for the comment Hugo - you are perfectly right, no nitpicking, I am very aware of it. I always try to crop the image on camera. In this case I was trying to show as much of the texture of the tree base, moving in closer. Only on the computer I realised it was a bit close. The light and detail on the subject was strong enough though (I thought) to carry the picture and I decided to upload. All the best and thanks again for the interest!

Hi Joggie,

Fascinating scene; the barren landscape with the almost playful textures in the dead tree - simply superb, as usual. The light and shadows on the remainders of the tree add to the dimension of the structure, which adds the finishing touch to me.

I'm curious why you composed the primary subject so closely to the edges - it creates a noticeable negative space in the top left quadrant, whereas I think observing a bit more space - especially in the foreground, and probably on top would've created a stronger feel of the desolated element of the place. Hope you see what I mean.... It's nitpicking - as usual - but it drew attention to it....

Nevertheless a very fine shot. I like these off centered build-ups of images - it allows the background to become a part of the photo too, which is very functional here.

Cheers,

Hugo

Una composizione che esalta le interessanti forme del soggetto, la corretta esposizione la rende ben leggibile anche con i forti contrasti dati dalla luce, davvero gradevoli le cromie.
