I like the balance of colours. And the subject too.
An exceptional and memorable photo.

Annemette: At first I assumed the spanish look was because her mother ate too many tacos while she was still pregnant. Later, I came to realize that her father, Francisco Ramirez was probably hispanic! LoL!

Cydney really looks like she´s wondering why that camera is almost built-in on her grandfather´s arm, a new human race never to be seen before. Adorable portrait- she looks so lovely as always. Is she part indian or hispanic maybe? Best wishes, Annemette

Thanks Markus . . . but she has her agenda and I have mine . . . she was filming a "Got Milk" commercial (see about section and title) and wouldn't THINK of doing it any other way! You can see that rather than drinking she's actually smiling! LoL!

Your granddaughter has beautiful looking eyes my friend and you have focused well upon them. I love boldly cropped portraits and this one is no exception Doyle. I love too the sidelighting, the superb dof and the excellent conversion to mono tones, something that I am still hopeless at. I am currently doing the odd portrait and hope to post my next one soon. Not a subject I have much success at mainly 'cos I can't get models who have enough patience:):) Well done to you my good friend for a very pleasing child portrait. All the best....Ray

I really like this- it seems so natural. The light and those beautiful eyes. Seems to capture character as well as looks.

As it happens . . . Marlyce likely is only partly right . . . the lil angel wanted me to take a "Got Milk?" picture from an advertising campaign we have here but you may not have seen. This campaign features people with a milk moustache on their upper lips . . . sometimes very famous people. The mirth in her eyes should be some indication that she couldn't keep serious enough for the 'milkstache' shot . . . but I far preferred this one anyway! Thank you Klaas!

Just like it Doyle, her looks are speaking for themselves. You can see her thinking, but what is she thinking???? Probably Marlyce is right. Take care,

Thanks Paul . . . I use PS Elements 4 now (instead of Nova) so will have to convert, I think, from your PS advice. Not everything can be done by both, but I do have dodge . . . though I've never used it (or the burn tool) and would have little or no idea how they could be effectively used . . . I find practice, combined with trial and error to be a reasonably good teacher (oh, and maybe crack a book or two when I'm not shooting / editing). . . though it doesn't work for everyone. That being said . . . I can see clearly what the intention of the effects you're recommending are and appreciate the technical feedback. My original image has a catchlight from the muted fill flash which was apparently not enough to overcome the upload . . . but I agree . . . it's better to have one and very simple to add when missing.
Thanks again for spending the time to help me on this one Paul . . . I really appreciate it!!
:)

I like the intimate distance and the action, but you should probably dodge the shaded area to lighten her up just a bit. Here's how I do it: In Photoshop, instead of using the dodge tool, I choose a soft brush, set the mode to Soft Light, choose a color of white, and set opacity and flow both to about 17 percent. Then, a couple brush strokes give a subtle, but noticeable lightening of shadows.
It wouldn't hurt to also add a catch-light to her eyes with a very tiny white brush set to normal mode. Just make sure it's positioned at the same spot in each eye.

Just cannot let this go by me. The look in her eye is so typical and I can just here her saying "grandpa, do you ever put that camera down?".
