Kim, this looks pretty good. You handled the shadows very well. You could be right about it being a little busy. It's like which one is the subject? Take a look at the food mags and cook books. I would prefer to see the stuffed tomato more isolated. In most food photos you will find only one item in focus. But for a shot wanted with everything in focus, you did very well. Let's see some more!

Yum! I want some of that tomato/basil/mozarella (with a little balsamic vinaigrette, maybe?) I have to agree that there is maybe too much 'real estate' between the various morsels - less plate, more food in the shot may help bring it together better. At the same time (and hopefully not a contradiction!) I'd also like to see more of the edges of the plate itself. I think it would frame the antipasti nicely, and also give the whole thing a little more 'context' (i.e. they're not sitting on the counter-top.) The food itself looks really appetizing - nice sheen to it! Sorry for the ramble and thanks so much for your comments on my recent photos! :)

Hi Kim, Yes definitely looks good enough to eat! I've tried food a couple of times (none I dared put up here though). I think the thing is to get more or less on eye level with the food and use minimal DOF to concentrate on perhaps 1 or 2 asparagus/prawn/whatever. Gotta go to the deli now.... H:)

This looks delicious. I find it surprisingly hard to photograph food well and I am always blown away by the shot I see in magazines like "Saveur". This shot has the textures and colors you want, the thing that could be improved is the composition IMHO. The central stuffed tomato is good, but then the rest feels a little random. Maybe too close? Definitely makes me want to eat it though (and I just had a big lunch :-)

Hey - I thought the cooking show was over! ;) Oh my sweet goodness - it definitely looks good enough to eat! Is it too crowded? No, no and no. In fact, I feel like the whole plate should be full. Seeing so much of the plate underneath makes me feel as if the food has been painstakingly arranged. I was just going to say that it should be in one big pile, but I'm going to retract that along with my previous statement because I just realized that these look like h'ors d'oerves. You know I'm not an expert at photographing food, but I'm thinking perhaps h'ors d'oerves need to have even more structure and less clutter (perhaps the asparagus bundles in a line in the foreground and the rest as a colourful backdrop?)
The lighting is fantastic. You're a little blown out on the closest asparagus bundle, but it's a small deal compared to the rest. I like the shine off the prawns. Do you have a white balance on the digital camera you're using? Because that white plate is white!
Have to go now . . . . soooo hungry!!
