Thanks Edward love the comments and agree. I have got caught up in rules and when friends look at my images they pick out the less correct images as there favs. I think what ever pleases the eye pleases the eye. Cheers Greg

I agree with you in this case for sure...the tree is nicely centered with the foreground running around it to the background. The branches running up into the sky. It is framed by both. The darker forground blends somewhat into the tree trunk but it works well because trees are shade. IMHO

My only question is why you feel the tree is too centered? It bothers me that so many people feel that a centred crop deserves a criticism? I crop the majority of my images so that the subject is centred on purpose, am I the only anti-rule of thirds rebel out there?
I must admit I never really understood the benefit of the rule of thirds; I have always preferred to centre the subject regardless of size, background or subordinate subjects. Please feel free to join my "rule of centre" revolution, and use "Edward's Rule" instead.
Perhaps this will spark an interesting debate or more likely I will be bombarded by pro-thirds advocates. Maybe it comes from not having any training or photography courses, but until someone can truly convince me of the benefit of the rule of thirds, I will continue to centre my shots...on purpose and enjoy the pictures of those who do the same. If it is a good shot, it is a good shot, regardless of any (in my opinion) antiquated rules.
All the best, Ed

Hi greg, very nice picture, although I think it is a bit to dark. The mountains are wonderfull indeed, and I agree with you about the tree, it looks to centered, i think that the ideal composition would be that it stood at 1/3 of the picture so that 2/3 what more background. What i do like is the snow at the mountaintops in the background, and he nice blue coloured sky comming trough. Overall still a wonderfull picture, but there is always something to change, that's wat makes it so interresting, trying to find the ideal composition lightning etc.!
Cheers, Lex.

Hi Ian. I'm thinking that a lot of comments left on my images state that they are not sharp when I know the original is and I dont do anything to alter the sharpness. maybe the reduction in size has a bit to do with it. Greg

Is it that thing on jpegs being resized to smaller that they lose definition. Some expect to sharpen then. Tried "smart sharpen" by the way? I just found it. Gives control of dark and light halo effect (not that I see any). Don't ask me about composition of course. But I do see the tree leading to the right.

Thanks Dean. I copied it then framed it but when posting it realised it wasn't as sharp as the original - not sure why.

I love the South Island! Breathtaking landscapes! Was skiing at Mt Hutt this year, hadn't skiied in 20 years and the South Island really laid on the snow for me... You're lucky to live in Gods own country, my friend (I was born in Auckland) and this pic really brings it all back. Stunning. Well Done...

The real colours with a day like that. The tree is the only protagonist here and I think that it is not an obligation to put something or on the left or on the right. I think that it depends from the contest and from what you want to render and to express. Hi Cecilia
