Taran,

I use extension tubes with the 300mm to being down the minimum focus of that lens so it can be used in close-up photography. With 68mm of extension I can get about 20" from subject to the end of the lens.

77mm close-up diopter? Canon 500D? Lens is the 300f/4 according to the info, so I am just wondering how you got in so close.

I have never seen a better picture of a Cottonwood Borer Beetle! Honestly, Ronnie, it's extremely well done. The composition, clarity, and colors are all terrific. A very pleasing macro, indeed.
Congratulations.

Fairly good sized critter, probably classed as a pest. But a beauty in its own right. Not so much depth of field to fret about as with so many macros on this site. It's a close-up, and it's very clean, and well composed. Nothing unnecessary. Even the colors nicely complement, the white, black and green. Great photo.
