Yes, I also find it easy to overcook things.

But it is worth reviewing why you like certain images (whether shot from the hip or not) more than others. What is different between them? What makes them work? What would I have changed, if I had more time? What would I NOT have changed?

In the case of this image, for example, if I was to be real picky, I would say that there are a couple of leaves intruding into the top center of the image. Were you to try again, perhaps you could have moved them, tied them back etc.

The lighting (strong shade) is perfect though, so keep that, try and repeat it, etc.

If your camera records EXIF, maybe you could post details of the shutter and apperture. In this image, the petals look a little bit "soft", and that may be either because of a wide aperture or slight shake (hand-held camera AND flowers), or maybe it just needs a bit of Unsharp Mask in Photoshop.

Keep up the good work!

p.s. I find the presentation, without overpowering and distracting frame, much better.

Thanks for your comment. This was an interesting shot. I was taking photos around the garden and my wife pick this plant up and said "Here, take a picture of this" and held it for the shot. Without thinking I just lifted up the camera and put the flowers in the screen and took the shot. It seems the more time I take to figure out how to take a photo the worse it gets. I've had better luck just shooting from the hip, so to speak...

Nice flowers, well framed, with a bit of room around them (doesn't feel claustrophobic), a largely undistracting background... a really nice image overall. Really good work.
