Bruce: Thanks for the comments. The secret to hummingbirds is to go where there are lots of them and spend a lot of time there. When they are found in large numbers, they ignore all humans and concentrate on defending their "turf" from the other hummingbirds. I have gotten within a foot or so of them at times.
