Just pulls me in, the thumbnail is minimal but full image speaks loudly. I like the lines and high key image, the strong light and solitary silhouette. I want to follow the flow from here. Congrats on the POD. You have a gift, and you use it. Bravo!!
Be well, stan ;)

I am happy that this shot touched your artistic soul.

To tell you the truth, this shot was taken in a hurry (as is many of my shots), but I liked the way it came out.

Thanks for the offer Avi but what I need is to learn how to do it and not see what you have done. I am in awe of some mono workers who convert from digital, maybe I don't try hard enough. I am truly envious of those who still use the modern day monochromatic emulsions in conventional cameras and I curse the day that I parted company with my Canon 1n.
Did you find time to look at my b&w attachment in where this 'conversation' started??
In the main I still prefer to see my shots as they were, in full colour but there are occasions when b&w would be the better choice. Thank you my friend.....I have PS CS2 if you have any advice to give with this in mind, I would be grateful. You can bang it in with my shot or my email address is in my bio. Always supposing that you have the time, of course.
All the very best to you as always Avi, take care and be well.......Ray

Avi  Avi     {K:70138} 8/7/2009
I sincerely thank you for all the accolades, Ray. Yes, as you have realised, I do prefer a certain 'style' of work, which mostly involves b/w, abstract/geometrical compositions, often grainy, dark, and toned. I have nothing against color, mind you, it is just that I feel I haven't really learnt how to handle colour properly. (And I hope to improve at that, some day)

As for your London Eye shot, if you don't mind, can I try a b/w conversion ? If so, let me know, I will also need the original file to work on.

My email contact is given in my profile.

Have a great weekend !
Avi

This is the kind of thing that you excel at Avi. Abstracts and mono work are just NOT me BUT I do enjoy viewing them my friend. In this we have a wonderful blurry image of a woman with an ethereal look about her and the faintly outlined corridor with traces of large windows is just excellent. I must confess that when I first viewed the very first thing that came into my mind via my wonky eyes was Michael Jackson. A very well composed monochrome study my friend.

I have just read that your idols are Bresson and Capa and that is fine for they are up there with the very finest. However, you must take into account that many of these great photographers only had the benefit of monochrome emulsions and goodness knows what might have happened if colour had made an earlier entry into our lives. I miss having a film camera and a darkroom these days but I made my bed and must lay in it. I went digital and cannot properly adapt to it.

Well done to you my friend, you are totally at one with conversion and since we first met in 2006 you have improved beyond all recognition. My very best wishes to you as always and I shall look forward to your next visit.........Ray

Thanks Gary. As a photographer, I consider Henri-Cartier Bresson and Robert Capa as my idols. I like the look of photographs made on b/w film.. I like grainy, blurry images that have interesting play of light/shade, unusual angles, over and under-exposures, some crazy dofs and above all, a good composition. Therefore, I am, as you correctly said, driven to photography by the heart. I am truly thankful for all the great comments and support I get here on Usefilm, beacuse this site has truly helped me grow.

best,
Avi

It's good to see well observed critiques like Konstantin's on usefilm. However, I think he's judging your image from the head and not from the heart. One of the first things I noticed and liked about the hat was the way it loses it's shape and merges with the strong background lighting. You probably didn't intend that, but it works for me. The two leading lines are all that is needed to convey the sense of movement but, in any case, is the sense of movement important to the image? I think it works just as effectively if we view her as standing still before she walks in the only direction she can. Good work, mate.
Regards, Gary

Hi Konstantin,

I appreciate your time and critique very much, my friend. I am a very quirky guy, who has no respect whatsoever to rules, and am always trying crazy things.. some work, others don't.. I leave it to my viewers to decide :)

cheers !

i don't know, you want a real critiques, you get it. Two points is distracting me. The one is overexposed on hat. The hat has no right contour, has no shape. And the second ones is dark spots on the floor and the ceiling. It is very easy to patch in PS. Keep shooting, your photos are great!!

PS and one more. The central composition is poor for motion. Your model is moving, but your composition does not
helps to get it over to your viewers.

i get bubbles in my head while looking at this image Avi-
so much it suggests to me, and nothing i can state! i look at a woman, whose face i do not see, walking ahead parallel with the lines that suggest her direction- as if she is just following some sort of pre-established destiny or i do not know what...

the composition is so strong with the main subject in the centre, where she pops out in extreme contrast with the settting/ white wall and pathway~

a winner for me.

regards,
v.
