About These birds are usually very skittish. This one was bold enough to sit for me.

Bill: PS works well. Do it in two steps, one small bright and one larger, less opaque. I was a digital media technician for one of Denver's largest ad agencies when I retired. I worked 40 hours a week as a digital retoucher. This particular catchlight is from a flash, however.
We stop feeding the birds in mid-May and switch to the hummer feeders. We don't start feeding again until mid-November. The hummers leave in mid-September usually. I wouldn't dream of leaving them with no food but the Pygmy Nuthatches do stow their seeds away into the fissures of tree bark. There are many, many feeders in our neighborhood as well. No worries, mate. They don't get any peanut butter when we travel but I think that is a luxury anyway. We also put out suet blocks in the woods behind the house. Only trouble is, it attracts House Sparrows and European Starlings.

Hi Fred,
I kind of knew that was a flash in the eye but my photography teacher once told me that if there wasn't a catch light you could add one in PS. Now I have yet to do that but you never know when it might come in handy to make a perfect picture.
As for feeding the birds to bring them in for photos, I do that a lot. I have six feeders all placed out the window for easy winter shots.
I think you'll get more birds after the snow than you might think. Finding food in a snow covered world is not easy so they will flock to your food.
Just one thing you should know. If they come to depend on your food supply and you stop feeding them before they can find their own food they may die!!! Once I start in fall I keep the feeders full until mid spring.
Good luck Fred,I look forward to more of these fantastic photos.

Bill: Thanks for your kind words. Would it be giving it away to say that the catchlight is from the flash? I have also set up more perch branches in our back deck flower box. I'm hoping to get more opportunities with these birds. I do lure them in with peanut butter and black sunflower seeds. It's supposed to snow soon so I may not get another chance for a while.

Wonderful Fred, The detail is unbelieveable. The catch light in the eye really makes this image stand out. Very well done.
