  Q. Thornton-Pickard Rollerblind in a Bind

Asked by Paul Tremain    (K=191) on 10/25/2005
Hi..

I've recently purchased a beautiful 5x7... a Thornton-Pickard "College" mahogany and brass 'woodie'. I got it for a song, so I have no complaints, but I'd love to get the shutter working again. It's the classic Thornton-Pickard "Time and Instantaneous" rollerblind shutter, and the spring is kaput. This is not surprising, as I believe the 'college' model was in production from 1912-1926. So I need to fix the spring and replace the curtain, as it is quite worn and full of tiny holes. Here's my other problem...I have absolutely no idea how to go about doing this. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Is there a good site to look this kind of thing up on? I live near Toronto, Canada, and have found one repairman who says he'll fix it for $200-300, but I'd like to do it myself if possible. Any suggestions, information, etc., would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time handling a large format camera, and I'm dying to get the thing working!

Thanks,

Paul.

Paul, I can't suggest anything othe than you should probably post this question over at one of the main LF forums, either http://www.apug.org or http://largeformatphotography.info

Hi Paul, This maybe a little late but I have a series of excellent articles on the restoration of Thornton Pickard roller blind shutter. This includes the replacement of the shutter. I can scan and emailed if interested. John Elliott

Hi John,

Yes! I would love any information you could pass on to me. I got a start on the project quite a while back, but had to put it aside while doing other things. It's difficult to find information on. Anything you could send would be greatly appreciated. My email address is:
tremainiac@hotmail.com

Thanks so much.

Paul Tremain.
