  Photography Forum: Nature Photography Forum:
  Q. Please caption your subjects!

Asked by Steve Kaufman    (K=2748) on 7/29/2005
No need for anyone to add to this thread. It would be helpful if more people would caption their photos. Not everyone knows the species of birds, plants, or animals photographed or where you shot the photo. The more information you give, the more the picture has impact.

I agree and I just saw someone add a little about the habitat where found and characteristics of the animal and I thought that was a nice touch which I think I'm going to start doing in my shots.

Naturally the caption would help the viewer. But sometimes caption is not necessary as the image talk by it's meaning.

Photo Veritas does not caption our photos because we believe that a photograph should speak for itself. While this practice may not always be workable or the chosen path for others, this works well for us.

Depends if the photo is of artistic content or educating content.

I believe Steve is referring specifically to the category of nature photography, and encouraging people to put something about the subject to share with other viewers. One of the widely accepted generalizations about nature photography is that these images are educational, although certainly using all the other methods of composing a good photograph do help increase the impact of the image on a large audience such as that found here at usefilm. If we wish to debate the merits of nature photographs, we can start another thread, as Steve has stated "no need to add to this thread".

On another note, if you want your image to get indexed in the search engines properlyor to be found in our search function, and to actually be seen by anyone after it rotates down a few pages in the gallery, then it is to your advantage to put as much information as possible about the image. This includes selections of categories, projects, image title, description of the image and location information. All of the other technical stuff helps as well as there is indexing based on camera and lens etc....

So if you want your image to be seen, which is why most people post to a public forum such as this, then it is to your advantage to caption things, and put as much info as you can into each posting.

If you don't want to put a title on an image, then do what Ansel Adams did and just put a 3 or 4 word description such as "Clearing Winter Storm".

Well, if you dont know, then now is an excellent time to learn! I always keep an eye out for good reference books, but if you dont want to bother looking it up your self, the local Fish and Wildlife Commission office will certainly help you out (if you live in the US that is). Ive hung out with enough bio-nerds from the local environmental agencies to know that help identifying is out there waiting. Who knows you may even find a model while doing it, Ive got a cute herpetologist friend back home ;).
