  Q. D3100 which lenses work with.... ?

Asked by Karl Davies    (K=276) on 6/6/2011
i have a collection of AF-S lenses at the moment and was looking to upgrade my D40 to a D3100. I have been told that AF lenses will not autofocus on the D3100 but the AF-S will.

Can anyone confirm that this is correct?

oh never mind was tired when i checked this morning....have just found this info on the Nikon site....

AF-S or AF-I NIKKOR: All functions supported. Type G or D AF NIKKOR without built-in autofocus motor: All functions except autofocus supported. Other AF NIKKOR without built-in autofocus motor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D color matrix metering II. IX NIKKOR and F3AF: Not supported. Type D PC lenses: All functions supported except autofocus and some shooting modes. AI-P NIKKOR: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D color matrix metering II. Non-CPU: Autofocus not supported. Can be used in exposure mode M, but exposure meter does not function. Electronic rangefinder can be used if lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster.

Like the D40, the D3100 lacks the in-body AF motors, depending instead on in-lens motors. That's why only AF-S lenses will work.
This was done to compete with the extremely low priced Canon entry level bodies, which can be so expensive because Canon doesn't have in-body motors anywhere.

Of course it does make your lenses heavier and more expensive
