hi,Greg....you could probably do both if only go to closest part of Oregon coast like the Cannon Beach area which is approx.205 miles south of downtown Seattle on HWY 101...but my fave part of Oregon coast is much further down where there are more light houses/old bridges and the Dunes area...
many photo ops in Seattle and here are a few of my own images showing you some...the last link is my Seattle only images which include a Lake WA sunrise,Lake Union sunsets,Gasworks Park on Lk.Union and Greenlake at sunset....if into architectural shots, there are some interesting bldgs. new and old (i believe visitors are still allowed to shoot from the upper floors of the Smith Tower bldg. downtown which offers stellar views),as well as totems...of course you don't want to miss spending a few hours at the Pike Place Market on first ave. downtown which is a whirlwind of color/textures/best people watching/street musicians/arts n' crafts/tasty food...photo ops galore if you pick a vantage pt. away from the crowds...
oh yeah, and don't forget to check out the huge Troll sculpture under a bridge in Fremont district...he is holding a real VW bug and just a fun public art piece to see/shoot....be careful tho' as the Troll has been known to snack on Californians...hehehe regards, gayle

I'm not much of a city person. I'd prefer the Oregon coastal area, lots of interesting landscape there (especially if you go a bit inland towards Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge).

Greg, Seattle is great but of the choices, definately go to oregon coast! I've photographed both locations. There's so much more to do and explore anywhere along the coast of Oregon.
check out my portfolio for specifics on Oregon.
cheers, nicole

You posted your message half a year ago, so you probably made your trip already, but anyway: The state of Washington, including Seattle, is loaded with attractive photo locations. Some that I've been to and took good pictures at:
Forest: Quinault and Hoh rain forests on the west side of the Olympics. Ocean: La Push and Kalaloch on the west coast of the Olympic peninsula. Desert: Yakima Canyon (route 821 between Ellensburg and Selah), Quincy Wildlife Area (just SW of Quincy). Animals: Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Northwest Trek near Mt. Rainier (has bison, wolves, bears, native birds and other native animals, many of them with lots of space to roam about).
The ferries across the Puget Sound are cheap and offer great spots to take pictures from. The Seattle - Bainbridge Island ferry is best for pictures of the Seattle skyline. Other good locations in Seattle include the Arboretum (and adjacent Japanese Garden), Green Lake (particularly early or late in the day), the downtown area (which is small and easily crossable by foot), the Central Library, the University district and pretty much any of the many parks (Seattle is a very spacious and green city and does not feel very urban except downtown).

It's been a while since you posted this but i'll reply nonetheless since it might help other folks. The Seattle area is definitely worthwhile but it depends on the time of the year. In summer it would be a definite Yes. I keep a blog of interesting photography locations around the Seattle area - http://seattlephotoadventures.blogspot.com. It might be useful to you.
