Beautiful b/w work. A penthouse of outhouses. I like the humorous title too. Great detail in the outhouse. I don't understand the loss of detail in the grass to the left though, unless its the scan. In answer to your question: It is some sort of moss that grows on stones. You'll find quite a bit of it if your ever hiking 1700 ft up one of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. That's where I found this fine speciman. regards --Todd

This is a great shot! I wish I could find interesting old outhouses and such to take photos of. I wonder how long it's been since it was used? When I was small (in the 70's) my parents almost bought a house out in the country with an outhouse. I've always been glad they didn't! Winters here can get cold and I didn't like the idea of having to leave the house to visit the john.

Brian, this is great in black and white. I used one of these in South Dakota when I was a little kid. (great great grampa's house). I think the composition is great!

Great shot! Makes me homesick for Canada. In one place where I grew up in northern Ontario we had a reading room like this as well. (-:
Minor suggestion: A bit of adjustment to bring out more detail/contrast in the foliage and tree stump in the foreground.

I like this since there aren't too many of these left. Good subject for bw. A few things that could make it better. The branch obscures the roof a little too much and it could use a bit more contrast. Perhaps a lower camera viewpoint or a tree trimmer would help with the branches. A lower viewpoint to include more of the tree stump. Overall it's still pretty good.

I love the subject of this... I still recall using one of these at my grandfather's homestead in Saskatchewan (they had a Sears catalog in there, but it wasn't for reading). :-) Only thing I may consider is cropping some of the left side out so the outhouse is not so centered.
