Thank you for your message Irenka. The image began as a blurred abstract of flowers, I used the Liquefy tool in Photoshop to create swirls of colour before cropping the image, duplicating and reversing it to make a mirror image. Regards - Mike

I have a liking for beachcombing and have a collection of objects with with I sometimes make small sculptures. I needed a still life shot for a book I was illustrating and as an attempt to avoid the usual cliches I decided to set this up on the beach, in a way which was inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. Thanks for your comment Larry. I used the layers facility in Photoshop to size and position four roughly cropped images. I then used the masking tool to paint away the areas of each image which I did not want and adjusted the see-through quality of each image by using layer modes and the opacity control.

Thanks for your comment Christophe. Regarding Velvia, it was usually my choice when shooting landscapes and architecture on film because I liked the extra colour saturation it gave my colour transparencies. But, in most cases, a colour transparency is really only a stage in the image making process, the end result will usually be either a colour print, a reproduction in a book or magazine or a web image on a monitor and these are all likely to be different in some degree to the original transparency. I now shoot almost exclusively with a digital camera and the ability to control the captured image makes it possible to achieve the quality of Velvia at will. Ultimately, the final quality of an image depends on the lighting and the way it is controlled in Photoshop and how well it is repoduced. I've attached an image which shows how a captured digital image has been varied using Photoshop controls to give a Velvia-like quality. Best regards - MikeB

It's a question of personal preference really and I felt the colours in the shop window were so dominant that it was best to create some balance by including a frame of plain blue around them. In some ways I think it heightens the impact of the coloured wools. MikeB

It was a close up of a section of rusted machinery Adrian and it reminded me of a face. To make it more so I cropped it and made a mirror image adding a pair of eyes copied from a photo of my cat, Tiffy. Regards - Mike

Yes Jaap it was shot just after sunset when the sky was at its reddist using a long exposure to blur the movement of the water.

The sky really was this dark and grey Elizabeth and there was only weak sunlight, as the lack of deep shadows indicates. It's just that this type of lighting does make colours like red look so much more saturated. It wasn't long before I got a soaking.
